This double-weave basket (with lid) illustrates the impact boarding schools continue to have on Native people today. Exterior splints are printed with boarding school founder Captain Richard H. Pratt’s speech that coined the phrase “Kill the Indian, Save the Man”. The historical photograph is the Carlisle student body in the year 1912. The red interior (lid and base) was woven from the 10-12,000 names of children who attended Carlisle from 1879-1918. During my research I found the names of two of my great- grandparents.
